Professor Emeritus of Ophthalmology

Dr. Maguire earned her doctoral degree in biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, served on the Johns Hopkins faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology, and was recruited in 1994 to lead the Center for Preventive Ophthalmology and Biostatistics at Penn.

Dr. Maguire is an internationally known expert in the design and conduct of multicenter clinical research in ophthalmology and has directed coordinating centers for several national trials. Dr. Maguire’s work has concentrated in the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration. She was the Director of the Coordinating Center for the Comparison of Age-related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT) and later served as a senior biostatistician for the DRCR Retina Network and the Foundation Fighting Blindness Clinical Consortium. Other areas of research include preschool vision screening, dry eye disease, corneal transplantation, and diabetic retinopathy. She has served on and/or chaired data and safety monitoring committees for clinical trials sponsored by NIH and industry including AREDS 2, the Neuro-Ophthalmology Research Disease Investigation Consortium, and the Adalimumab in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis-associated Uveitis Stopping Trial.

Dr. Maguire directed the Penn Vision Clinician Scientist Program (K12) for 15 years and has a longstanding interest in mentoring clinician scientists. Dr. Maguire is a Gold Fellow and past president of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). She has received the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Singerman Award from the Macula Society, and the Gass Award from the Retina Society. She is currently a member of the editorial board for JAMA Ophthalmology and IOVS and has served on the boards of Ophthalmology and four other journals. She has more than 350 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of ophthalmology and clinical research.
