Michael Harhay

Michael Harhay, PhD, MPH

Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care), and Statistics and Data Science

Dr. Harhay’s research program is funded by the NIH and PCORI and focuses on developing statistical methods, study designs, and outcome measurement approaches to improve randomized trials and observational research studies for patients with critical and severe illnesses such as sepsis, respiratory failure, and end-stage organ disease. He is particularly interested in leveraging causal inference methods to better design and analyze pragmatic and cluster-randomized trials. His work in clinical trials methodology also focuses on missing data, clustered survival methods, estimand refinement, and Bayesian trial applications. He also leads and collaborates on multiple studies focused on the allocation of solid organs for transplantation and on long-term outcomes following hospitalization. He is the author of more than 180 scientific publications and is involved in several international research activities, including randomized trial data safety and monitoring boards, societal and trial steering committees, and research consortiums. He also serves as a statistical editor to several leading journals in critical care medicine and is an editor of the International Journal of Epidemiology.
