Title: The Asthma Mobile Health Study, a Large Scale Clinical Observational Study Using ResearchKit.Abstract: In March 2015, Apple launched ResearchKit, which is an open-source platform for mobile health research. As one of the five original launch partners, Dr. Pei Wang and her team developed the Asthma Health Application (AHA) and conducted the Asthma Mobile Health Study (AMHS) used to examine the value and validity of ResearchKit and meanwhile help patients manage their asthma. This study was conducted entirely remotely by smartphone, including recruitment, consent, and enrollment. There were over 8,000 participants completed the enrollment process within 6 months and 6,470 of them responded to at least one survey in the study. This study detected increased reporting of asthma symptoms in regions affected by extreme temperature, pollen, air quality, and pollutant exposure and also demonstrated the power and tremendous potential of mobile health technology in health-care and clinical research. In the talk, I will discuss various data analysis challenges and solutions in handling app based data in our Asthma study.
