"Using Individual-Based Epidemiologic Modeling to Estimate the Effectiveness of the Miami Getting to Zero HIV Campaign"Daniel J. Escudero, PhDResearch Associate, Department of EpidemiologyT.H. Chan School of Public HealthHarvard University   My interests in epidemiology began as I started an MPH at Emory. While there, I was exposed to several facets of epidemiology, and was captivated by the work of organizations like the CDC, UNAIDS, WHO and others. It was at the CDC's Global AIDS Program that I began my work on HIV prevention. While completing my PhD in epidemiology at Brown, I investigated the role of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention (TasP) among marginalized populations and began to use more advanced epidemiological tools, such as agent-based modeling (a form of mathematical modeling). I also discovered a love for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, assisting with five different epidemiology and global health courses at Brown and delivering a host of invited lectures to student audiences of all kinds. At Harvard, I am continuing work on HIV prevention, but will be expanding my research to include other methodological tools and populations. I also recently took on an instructor position at Harvard, teaching EPI 256, the second in a series of HIV epidemiology courses. After I complete this postdoctoral position, I hope to continue to investigate, teach and promote infectious disease epidemiology to all those who are willing to listen!
