"Supporting and Conducting COVID-19 Research with Informatics at Penn and Beyond" DANIELLE LEE MOWERY, PHD MS MS Assistant Professor | Biostatistics, Epidemiology, & Informatics Scientific Director | Penn Clinical Research Informatics Core Chief Research Information Officer | Penn Medicine Senior Fellow | Penn Institute for Biomedical Informatics University of Pennsylvania Dr. Mowery arrived at Penn in September of 2018. As a collaborative investigator, her research focuses on developing and evaluating natural language processing (NLP) algorithms for processing health-based texts— i.e., clinical notes and social media— to support clinical research. She aims to develop clinical research infrastructure — e.g., domain knowledge acquisition and interactive NLP systems — to reduce the time to create knowledge bases, extract key clinical variables, and generate patient cohorts for study. She leverages NLP, data science and computational methods to glean information from unstructured texts and structured clinical data to help clinical investigators better understand disease burden, treatment efficacy and clinical outcomes. Her work aims to uncover scientific discoveries and optimize translation of research into patient care. As Chief Research Information Officer in Penn Medicine, she directs the clinical research informatics core within the Institute for Biomedical Informatics — a key position designed to bridge the gaps between clinical data, research expertise and actionable healthcare knowledge. Dr. Mowery represents Penn Medicine in regional, national and international clinical research informatics communities. Dr. Mowery also serves as a Senior Fellow in IBI.
