"The Health System as a Laboratory: Using EHR Data to Study Drug Effects in Hospitalized Patients"
Todd Miano, PharmD, MSCE
Dr. Miano is a clinical investigator and critical care pharmacist who has dedicated his career to improving drug safety and effectiveness in the hospitalized population. Pharmacotherapy in hospitalized patients is complex, being characterized by the intersection of extensive outpatient treatment regimens with inpatient drug therapy. The number of medications given to patients during an average hospital admission increases 2-3 fold from baseline outpatient regimens. Moreover, this group often has acute illness or acute changes of organ function that may render them more susceptible to adverse drug effects. Dr. Miano's research leverages electronic health record (EHR) data to develop large-scale projects to address these challenges. Particular areas of emphasis include drug induced acute kidney injury, anticoagulation safety and comparative effectiveness, and the clinical impact of drug-drug interactions.
